This design was originally drawn in Indian ink. I transferred the artwork to the computer so that I could play around with it, trying out different colours and borders but ultimately kept it simple. I finally had a large Giclee print made from the computer file. For a long time I was very anti Giclee because I saw it merely as a method of reproduction. As an original printmaker I had no interest in reproducing works already existing on paper printed directly from engraved blocks. However, as a means of realising an ambition to produce work much larger than I could print from a small block I decided it had distinct possibilities. This image can be printed at any size up to about a metre square. Engraved it is not. This is modern technology. Wood engraving is eighteenth century technology. I am happy to embrace both. Each has its place.
